If you're looking for a true unspoiled, virtually unvisited tropical jungle haven, where you can explore the ecosystem at your own pace from the comfortable seclusion of your own jungle hideaway, come up to northern Costa Rica and spend a while with us at La Laguna del Lagarto Lodge.
We offer you 1250 acres of virgin tropical rainforest. Roam through this tropical paradise alone or with a local guide, exploring more than ten miles of trails and spotting red and green poison dart frogs (Dendrobates Auratus), monkeys, toucans, parrots, alligators and an incredible variety of trees and plants. We have identified over 350 different species of birds, among them the rare Great Green Macaw which you will find only in this region. There are also small pepper, heart of palms, yucca and pineapple plantations, where you can see traditional farming procedures in use.
Located in a secluded, exclusive region, the Lodge has only 20 double rooms, with private baths, hot water and ceiling fans. Our open view restaurant features a traditional Costa Rican menu at breakfast, lunch and dinner. For entertainment, we offer canoeing on two lagoons into the jungle, hiking marked jungle trails, hoseback riding, a boat trip on the San Carlos river, or simply relaxing on our spacious terraces.
We won't say that "getting there is half the fun," but we will say that the driving is easy and the views are spectacular! On your way to the Lodge, you'll pass through Alajuela - Costa Rica's second city - then climb the side of the Poas Volcano, noted for its wide crater. Turning right to Varablanca, you'll see beautiful coffee fincas, followed by strawberries and ornamental plant nurseries. As you descend, you will enter the famous lowlands of San Carlos, where sugar cane, yucca, pineapple and most of Costa Rica's citrus fruits are grown.
The road is paved clear to Pital, over 60 miles from San Jose, after which youw ill find a good gravel surface for another 18 miles to Boca Tapada, followed by another 4 miles to the Lodge, also on a firm gravel road.
