"What Costa Rica is All About"
Drake Bay Wilderness Camp

Costa Rica has become world renowned for its wealth of natural beauty, abundance of wildlife, and its dedication to the preservation of its unique and diverse ecology. No place in Costa Rica offers the visitor a better opportunity to study and appreciate the richness of this tiny nation than Drake Bay Wilderness Camp.

Located on the Osa Peninsula, along Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast, Drake Bay Wilderness Camp enjoys a remote, pristine setting, while remaining easily accessible from San José. Relatively little has changed here since Sir Francis Drake visited the tiny protected bay in 1579 during his circumnavigation of the globe.

Some say that Pirates have left a hidden treasure on nearby Caño Island. On our day trips to this uninhabited tropical paradise, our knowledgeable guides will teach you about the island’s unique history. Used as a burial sight by pre-columbian indigenous peoples, many graves and artifacts, including mysterious stone spheres, remain half-buried in the rain forest undergrowth.

Snorklers and scuba divers will find a treasure of their own in the surrounding clear waters of Cano Island. These waters are home to Oliver Ridley turtles, reef sharks, spotted rays, moray eels, bottle nosed dolphins, an amazing variety of colorful tropical fish, and several pelagic species - including marlin, tuna, and giant mantas. Sperm, humpback, pilot, and killer whales are routinely sighted in the area. Our friends from the Oceanic Society and the Smithsonian institute have had repeated success during annual whale-watching research expeditions at the Wilderness Camp.

To further explore our waters, climb aboard a chartered fishing boat or sign up for single or multi-day sea kayak tours within surrounding estuaries or along the spectacular southern coastline. For a more relaxing trip on the water, canoe up our jungle river for a chance to see howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, several species of tropical birds, and the great blue morpho butterfly.

More opportunities for bird watchers and nature photographers abound in nearby Corcovado Park, the most remote and least visited of Costa Rica's National Park System. Corcovado Park is home to a huge of plant and animal species, including 139 species of mammals. The highest population of scarlet macaws in Central America can be found here, as can healthy populations of jaguar, ocelot, and the rare Baird' tapir. Our day trips to the park make exploration easy, including lunch, transportation to the park by boat, and expert naturalist guides.

For the adventurous, horseback tours may also be arranged. Ride on deserted beaches and along our rain forest trails. Stop for a swim in the Claro River, or visit the Wilderness Camp's butterfly farm and orchid garden.

Our 20 charming, tropical cabins are complete with hot water showers, tile bathrooms, porches and ceiling fans. All have a view of the bay and surrounding rain forest. Tents are also available, furnished with twin beds, electricity, and a fan. A path leads to a nearby beach for sunbathing and snorkeling. Nap in the evening in one of the palm-shaded hammocks, or swim in our natural salt-water tide pool. Keep a lookout for the Wilderness Camp’s three resident squirrel monkeys. The are extremely friendly, and photogenic. You might have difficulty prying them off your lens!

Our fully-stocked, open-air bar is a great place to relax and watch the warm colors of evening settle over the bay. Guests also enjoy three tasteful meals a day, featuring fresh caught local fish, produce, tropical fruits, and homemade breads and desserts. For your convenience, laundry service is also available.

Chartered flights and boat transfers to Drake Bay Wilderness Camp run daily for our guests. For a unique experience, ask in advance about our float plane service!

Come to Drake Bay Wilderness Camp to experience the best of Costa Rica. Our ten years of experience ensure that you will get the most from your vacation. Make us your headquarters for fun and adventure!
